Core Curriculum
St. Patrick Catholic School uses the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills as a basis for it's curriculum.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Language Arts curricula derive from national standards and include creative thinking, print and phonological awareness, decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, reading fluency, literary concepts, readers’ theatre, poetry, written expression, graphic organizers and higher order thinking skills.
SAXON PHONICS©—(Used in
SHURLEY GRAMMAR METHOD©—(Used in Grade 1-8) a Language Arts program that helps students learn grammar and writing skills, as well as how to diagram sentences. Students are taught a series of rhymes, jingles, and songs which help them internalize grammar's building blocks. Students are provided a n excellent basis to continue on and excel in higher level English courses.
VOCABULARY IN ACTION©—(Used in Grade 4-8) With this comprehensive program, students study and learn hundreds of words that were researched and selected for frequency, occurrence, and relevance to the real world as well as standardized assessment. Consumable student books pair with on-line resources and teacher instruction to provide vocabulary instruction that is introduced, reinforced, and applied in engaging, systematic ways.
READING COUNTS©—(Used in Grade K-8) Reading Counts is a self paced reading comprehension program. Student select reading material and then take a 10 question quiz. Points are accumulated based on the difficulty of the material and the score of the quiz. Students are rewarded for scoring 25 or more points.
MATH
Mathematics follows national standards with manipulative-based curricula that focus on numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, probability and problem solving. Inductive and Deductive Reasoning are woven into the curriculum with logic problems and higher order thinking skills. St. Patrick consistently earns exemplary marks in testing and competition in math.
KUMON MATH©—(Used in Grade Prek-3-8) a supplemental, individualized math program that allows students to progress at their own rate. The program fosters a mastery of the basics of math, self discipline and self confidence. Students that excel in Kumon also excel in higher level Math courses. We are the only private school in the area that offers this specialized math program.
EVERDAY MATHEMATICS©—(Used in Grade 1-6) Everyday Math is a program that focuses on real life problem solving, balance between whole group and self directed learning, emphasis on communication, and appropriate use of technology. Underlying the EM curriculum are six strands of knowledge: Algebra; Data and Chance; Geometry; Measurement; Numeration and Order; Patterns, Functions, and Sequences; Operations; and Reference Frames.
RELIGION
Religion addresses one of the school’s primary goals of fulfilling the educational ministry of the Catholic Church. The curricula adhere to the 15 goals set forth by the Diocese of Tyler and draw from the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) guidance program (Faith, Family and Friends). The child centered weekly liturgy and Christian service are hallmarks of the faith community.
SCIENCE
Science follows national standards for inquiry instruction and scientific methods. At least 40 percent of instruction is devoted to demonstration and experimentation.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies links past, present and future with curricula that cultivate an integrated approach to geography, societal structures and cultural experiences.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical Education classes are provided daily to enable students to build loco-motor and non-loco motor skills and manipulative-based movement ability.
